No Big Expense Required: SWEPCO Shows How Small Changes Cut Energy Bills

SHREVEPORT, La. (May 11, 2026) – Spring is a time when many review their home energy needs and look for ways to manage costs as warmer months approach. Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) offers tools, programs, and rebates designed to help customers reduce energy use and stay comfortable, no matter the season.

“Customers who take part in SWEPCO’s energy‑saving programs can save up to 10 percent on their average heating and cooling costs each year,” said Debra Miller, SWEPCO’s energy efficiency and consumer programs manager. “Small changes made now can have a big impact when summer heat arrives.”

Reducing energy use doesn’t require major renovations or expensive upgrades. Simple, often low‑cost steps can help prevent air loss, stop leaks, and lower future cooling bills.

Easy ways to lower energy costs

  • Spring clean with purpose: Clean behind refrigerators, dust light bulbs, and wipe sliding door tracks to help keep cool air inside.
  • Get cooling systems ready: Schedule air‑conditioning maintenance, replace filters, and review thermostat settings.
  • Using window units? Seal gaps around the unit, cool only rooms in use, clean filters often, and turn units off when rooms are empty.
  • Use ceiling fans wisely: Set fans to spin counterclockwise for summer cooling and turn them off when rooms aren’t occupied.
  • Seal air leaks: Weatherstrip doors and caulk windows to keep conditioned air inside.

For customers who want to take the next step in controlling energy costs and improving comfort, SWEPCO offers several additional options:

  • $75 smart thermostat rebate: Customers may qualify for a $75 rebate when purchasing an ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostat.
  • No‑cost home energy assessments: Eligible SWEPCO customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas can receive a no‑cost home energy assessment to pinpoint air leaks and other sources of energy loss that can drive up bills. Conducted by SWEPCO‑certified contractors, the assessment helps determine whether a home may qualify for energy‑saving improvements such as insulation, duct sealing, or weatherstripping – many of which are available at little or no cost, depending on eligibility – helping customers improve comfort and reduce energy use before summer.
  • ENERGY STAR® appliances and incentives: SWEPCO provides incentives on a range of energy‑efficient appliances and equipment.

“By choosing energy‑efficient options that fit their homes and budgets, customers remain in control – saving money while keeping their homes comfortable throughout the year,” Miller added.
