Texas Residents May Be Eligible for Assistance with Summer Electric Bills

SHREVEPORT, La. — Texas residents can register for help with their summer electric bill through the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP. SWEPCO wants you to know that help is available for qualifying residents to cover home energy costs.

To be eligible for LIHEAP, Texas households generally need to have an income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level or 60% of the state’s median income. Priority is given to households with elderly members, individuals with disabilities and those with young children. The size of the household and location may also be considered for eligibility.

To apply, you will need:

  • A photo ID (valid driver’s license or state ID for all household members 18 and older)
  • Proof of residency (current utility bills, lease agreement or other document showing Texas address)
  • Social Security cards (for all household members)
  • Pay stubs (recent pay stubs for all employed household members)
  • Other Income Documentation (Proof of any benefits received for any household member including Social Security, unemployment or other benefits – provide award letters or documentation for current year)
  • Declaration of Income Form (if you don’t have income documentation)
  • Recent Utility Bills (copies of your most recent electric, gas, and/or water bills)
  • 12-Month Billing History (from each energy provider)
  • Disconnection Notice
  • Rental Agreement (if utilities are included in your rent)

In 2023, more than 75,000 Texas households were served by LIHEAP during the summer. On average, each household received $1,751 to help with the summer electric bill.
