New book explores the promise of freedom through Juneteenth
‘Juneteenth: The Promise of Freedom’ examines history, heritage and humanity
MADISON, Wis. – A powerful new book titled “Juneteenth: The Promise of Freedom” (published by Xlibris) is set to reshape the conversation around America’s newest federal holiday. By weaving together an expansive view of history — from the origins of humankind and the remarkable achievements of African civilizations, to the legacy of enslavement and the social construct of race — this groundbreaking work offers a transformative look at why Juneteenth matters both then and now.
In “Juneteenth: The Promise of Freedom,” the author Dr. Charles Taylor presents a comprehensive journey through:
- The Origin of Man: An insightful exploration of human evolution and early societies, highlighting Africa’s pivotal role in shaping global civilization.
- Achievements of Civilizations Before Enslavement: A celebration of the cultural, technological, and intellectual advancements of pre-colonial African societies—accomplishments often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
- Race as a Social Construct: A revealing discussion on how ideas about race were designed to uphold oppressive structures, and the long-lasting impact those ideas continue to have on Black communities worldwide.
- Oppression of African Slaves in America: A deeply researched account of the brutality endured by enslaved Africans—shedding light on the systemic inequalities that persisted after Emancipation.
- The Significance of Juneteenth: A thorough examination of the holiday’s origins in Texas, its evolution into a nationwide commemoration, and its role as a symbol of hope, resilience, and progress for Black Americans.
“‘Juneteenth: The Promise of Freedom’ reminds us that understanding Black history—beyond the narrative of enslavement—is essential to truly grasp the scope of African and African American achievements,” says Taylor. “My goal is to bring readers into a deeper awareness of the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped the African Diaspora, while also highlighting the enduring spirit of freedom that Juneteenth represents.”
Taylor’s first Juneteenth book, “A Celebration of Freedom,” was used in the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation’s campaign to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
