Deidre Harrison’s Debut book ‘Pearl’ is a tale of survival, bravery and community

New book touches on pressing themes of climate change and personal identity through the eyes of a young harbor seal

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Deidre Harrison marks her debut in the world of publishing with the release of “Pearl” (published by Archway Publishing). This charming story follows the journey of a young harbor seal as she navigates the complex and evolving landscape of her ocean home while seeking to understand her true worth against the pressures of living up to her mother’s legacy.

Pearl is a young harbor seal who must discover her own identity, her own bravery, and her community in a challenging world. Her mother, the Black Pearl, demands strength and resilience from her daughter in preparation for the perils ahead. As Pearl grows and gains independence, she learns about the dangers that lurk in her ocean environment, including thinning kelp forests, great white sharks, and deadly orca. When her mother is severely injured, it is Pearl who must rise to the occasion and protect their kind, learning the true meaning of bravery and sacrifice in the process.

“Pearl” is a beautifully illustrated story that weaves themes of belongingness, resilience and acceptance. What sets the book from other works in the genre is its delicate balance of literary storytelling with scientific accuracy. Harrison’s narrative brings to life the trials of a young harbor seal while also shedding light on critical issues such as climate change, individualism, and the essence of community. Through Pearl’s story, readers are invited to reflect on the importance of working together and the need to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

“I would like readers to come away with a new awareness of and respect for the natural world within the ocean, as well as insight into how climate change is affecting the creatures of the sea,” Harrison states. “I also hope readers care specifically for my characters and feel uplifted by the journey they take.”

“Pearl” is now available at Archway Publishing and other major bookstores and online platforms.
