Texas Students Recognized Nationally in NACD Photo and Poster Contests

The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) announced the winners of its 2025 Photo and Poster Contests during the 80th NACD Annual Meeting, held in San Antonio. The annual contests highlight the creativity and conservation awareness of students from across the nation, and this year, Texas youth were proudly among those recognized on the national stage.

Bill introduced to protect U.S. livestock from NWS

Legislation aimed at strengthening the federal response to New World screwworm (NWS) was introduced in Congress. The Safeguarding America’s Food Economy and Controlling Agricultural Threats to Livestock and Enterprises Act, known as the SAFE CATTLE Act, would establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of the Interior (DOI). The agreement would coordinate efforts to prevent, control and eradicate New World screwworm (NWS) in wildlife on federal lands.

Private water well screenings set for Hays County March 4-5

The Texas Well Owner Network, TWON, is hosting an upcoming event in Hays County on March 4-5 to allow residents to have their well water screened. Joel Pigg, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program specialist, College Station, said the Texas Well Owner Network program is for Texas residents who depend on household wells for their water needs. “The TWON program was established to help well owners become familiar with Texas groundwater resources, septic system maintenance, well maintenance and construction, and water quality and treatment,” he said.

In San Marcos, neighbors called it a small victory early Wednesday after the city council narrowly rejected a rezoning proposal for a planned AI data center south of town. The decision came at around 2 a.m., following hours of debate about growth, infrastructure and water security. Next week, Hays County commissioners are expected to consider their own measure that could halt new data center developments, citing concerns about the region’s shrinking water supply.
