The Northeast Texas Community College Visual Arts program has opened its first art exhibit of the academic year in the foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. The show, which runs September 10–24, features the work of mixed media and abstract artist Michelle Dvorak. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular business hours.

A special artist reception will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 12:30 p.m., giving the community an opportunity to meet Dvorak and learn more about her creative journey.

Dvorak

Dvorak traces her passion for art back to her childhood, where she was known for turning everyday objects into canvases—even her dolls and bedroom walls. Her artistic inspiration is deeply rooted in family, as she is the granddaughter of West Coast artist Phyllis Surlage.

After beginning her studies in commercial art, Dvorak’s path took an unexpected turn when she joined the United States Air Force. She spent three years stationed in Berlin, Germany, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall—an experience that shaped her worldview and artistic perspective.

Over the years, she has explored many creative careers, including cosmetology, teaching, interior design, home staging, furniture art, and faux painting. Today, her focus is on mixed media and abstract work, where she values the deeply personal connections viewers make with each piece.

“What I love about abstract art is that the perception of the piece is up to the viewer,” Dvorak explained. “The best I can hope for my body of work is it makes you feel something—whatever that may be, good or bad.”

Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Whatley Center foyer to experience Dvorak’s thought-provoking work and take part in NTCC’s celebration of the arts.
