JIMMY CARTER REACHES AGE 100

by JAMES A. MARPLES
***************************************************
I am immensely glad that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has reached age 100 in Plains, Georgia.   In terms of personality and morals, he is my favorite President of my lifetime.  I would have to qualify that he may not have been a very great performer in the office, but at least he was decent.  In terms of decision-making, I liked the firmness of resolve that Presidents Truman and Kennedy had.  I was born just 22 days after JFK’s death in 1963.
Oddly, and not by choice (just coincidence), I first “parted my hair” on the right side as Jimmy Carter did when he was first elected. In the latter days of Carter’s presidency, he “parted his hair on the left” (as JFK did).  I admit to copying that part of Carter’s decisions.  I still part my hair on the left.
James Earl Carter, Jr.,  did a fantastic thing by facilitating the Camp David Peace Accords between Israel and Egypt.  I just wish that we had such as statesman on the current world stage.  I am disappointed in President Biden and I am saddened by the horrific acts of Hamas and their allies.
Jimmy Carter did a good service by serving in the U.S. Navy;  and as Governor of Georgia.  He did bring dignity back to The White House after Watergate.  Sadly, it was sullied later-on.
I salute President Carter for his surviving hospice this long.  He and I share the same nickname of “Jimmy”. More Presidents have had the given name of “James” than any other name.  Happy 100th birthday.
