Blood donors helped Texas girl battle childhood cancer

At the age of 3, McKenzie Covert was diagnosed with acute leukemia.

Because of the intense physical demands of her chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions played a role in McKenzie’s treatment. She received multiple transfusions as chemotherapy drugs decreased her blood and platelet counts. Without transfusions, doctors would have been unable to continue her chemotherapy.

Today, her mother, Tiffany, proudly describes McKenzie as “a healthy, smart, active, sassy, beautiful 12-year-old.”

Tiffany and her husband Jeff say Carter BloodCare donors made the difference in their daughter’s life.

“We are forever grateful to those who donate,” Tiffany said. “You are truly saving lives.”

By giving at this month’s blood drive, Carter BloodCare donors also help people severely injured in car wrecks, children with anemia, organ transplant recipients, people wounded in shootings, moms experiencing difficulties during childbirth, and older adults who require surgery after falls.

As a thank-you gift for donating through Aug. 31, Carter BloodCare will give each donor a brand-new Summer Lifesaver beach towel.
