The stars of good fortune aligned when Columbus M. ‘Dad’ Joiner struck oil with the Daisy Bradford #3 on one of the state’s largest oil fields. The town of Kilgore officially became known as the “City of Stars” decades later as dozens of oil derricks twinled in the night skies.

Stargazing is also encouraged on Saturdays in September and October at the Stephen F. Austin State University Planetarium in Nacogdoches. Read about their shows in this issue — they may align with your plans for exploring the Upper East Side of Texas. — Lisa Tang

Wildcatter Dad Joiner Strikes Oil in East Texas

On September 4, 1930, the Daisy Bradford #3 oil well was discovered near what became known as Joinerville, Texas, ensuring that East Texas became a huge player in the nation’s oil industry. It was named after the property owner and Joinerville’s namesake was the wildcatter Columbus Marion “Dad” Joiner. READ MORE.
