As a piano teacher Agnes Wilkinson influenced many lives in Mount Vernon — and the piano purchased in her memory continues its service with classic beauty in Mount Vernon Music Hall today. — Lisa Tang

Anita Hill’s Ancestry Traces Back to New Boston

Bowie County (home to Texarkana, New Boston, and De Kalb, Texas) is one of only three known counties in America that documented the actual names of its enslaved residents in 1850. Everywhere else, they were only listed by age and gender.

As Henry Louis Gates, Jr. points out in an episode of “Finding Your Roots“ on PBS TV, that rare occurrence in New Boston, Texas, led to finding the ancestry of attorney, gender equality leader, and author Anita Hill. READ MORE.

Steinway Grand Piano Honors Mount Vernon’s Miss Agnes

The six-foot Steinway Grand Piano Model A in Mount Vernon Music (MVM) Hall has an interesting history that started more than a century ago. In 2005 Tom Wilkinson purchased the grand piano from Steinway Dallas for Mount Vernon Music in memory of his aunt Agnes Wilkinson Burns — known locally as “Miss Agnes.” READ MORE.
