Reflecting on Mothers Day reminds us of our mothers’ sacrifices during our youth when their care and tenderness were most important.
The Native American captive Cynthia Ann Parker is one of the state’s most famous women. She was already a wife and mother at the time of her so-called rescue from the Comanche tribe that kidnapped her at age 10. Parker and her infant daughter Prairie Flower were brought to live at Fort Parker in Anderson County before the infant died of disease. Both are featured in the story below.
As folks in Mineola celebrate the town’s sesquicentennial this week we can only wonder how many mothers made sacrifices for their children or lost them to disease over those long 150 years. Perhaps we can now celebrate because we survived. — Lisa Tang
