The boys of the summers of 1983 to 1993 are returning to Gilmer next weekend for some old timer fun and some serious fund-raising. Several baseball players are coming back for “one more game” to raise money for the Matt Camp Scholarship Fund at Gilmer High School.

Coaches Paul Moon, Pat Camp, David Skinner and Bud Hudgins will lead four teams in having fun with their favorite sport and in commemorating their one-time teammate, Matt Camp, who died of cancer last year.

Organized by Ben Rush, the 1980s All Star Baseball Tournament seeks to increase the funds for the Matt Camp Scholarship.

Players from Gilmer and surrounding towns will gather Friday for a meet-and-greet at the Gilmer Country Club. Next, the teams will form on Saturday morning, July 3, get their uniforms and practice before they play their pool games between 2 and 6 p.m.

Saturday evening, the players, family and friends will retreat to the Gilmer Civic Center for a banquet. A highlight of the evening will be a gift to the Matt Camp Scholarship Fund as a result of the fund-raising efforts of these former teammates and opponents of Camp.

On Sunday, the teams will meet at Matt Camp Ball Park at 2 p.m. for the championship game, with the concluding ceremonies scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

In addition to Moon, Camp, Skinner and Hudgins, many familiar names have appeared on the facebook page ordering their uniforms with their old playing numbers. Among them are: bat boy Cade Camp, and players Ben Rush, Chris Bedard, Chad Poe, Ryan Bruins, Matthew Langford, Paul Wilson, Troy Montgomery, Mark Skinner, Damon Hollis, Darin Hollis, Ricky Stone, Matt Morgan, Lance Sewell, Blake Brinkman, Mike Morgan, Chris Steger, Chris Jones, Darren Morgan, Andy Lyles, Rowdy Nutt, Rebel Jackson, Ronnie McNeel, Johnnie Hererra, Wade McDonald, Joey Hector, Chris Ogden, Jerry Pyle and Denny Bowles.

Individuals wishing to be a sponsor and to contribute to the scholarship fund may contact Ben Rush at benjaminrush@yahoo.com, or call him at 910-545-1320.
