Two painters from Gilmer were critically burned Tuesday when a flash fire erupted as they were working in a Longview home, and one of them died Wednesday afternoon in a Dallas hospital.

Jerry Gaston and his employee, Becky Chamberlain, painting subcontractors, were working at 12 Ramblewood Drive when the flash fire happened at about 10 a.m.

According to homeowner Vickey Steinhauser, the two painters were painting near a gas water house when it ignited an aerosol spray can they were using in a poorly ventilated area.

She said she was in another part of the house and heard a pop.

Ms. Chamberlain, 48, suffered first- and second-degree burns on more than 5 percent of her body, and second- and third-degree burns on more than 50 percent of her body, said Longview Fire Investigator Joey Cowan.

She died at the Parkland Hospital burn unit.

Gaston, 49, sustained second- and third-degree burns on 20 percent of his body, including his hands and arms.

“He is still in the 72-period (after the fire), so they haven’t completed evaluating him,” said Ricky Rigsby, associate pastor at Gilmer’s First Baptist Church, where Gaston attends. “It’s going to be a long road to recovery.”

His condition was upgraded to “fair” on Wednesday.

The home suffered moderate damage, Cowan said.

Authorities wanted to airlift them to Parkland, but weather would not permit the helicopters to fly, so they were transported by land ambulance.
