The Gilmer High School Buckeye Marching Band has had a very successful marching season this fall, with first division awards at the UIL Region 4 Marching Contest, and an 8th place finish at the UIL Area C Marching Contest and a 3rd place finish at the National Association of Military Marching Bands Marching Contest.

The band also earned a Superior Performance Award at the NAMMB Contest.

That award is for bands that score at least 930 points out of a possible 1,000 in the categories of marching, music performance and general effect.

The band began preparing for this year’s competitions on Aug. 4 with rehearsals focusing on fundamentals, music memorization, teamwork and drill mastery.

As the year progressed, more of the drill would be placed on the field while learning new music.

The result was the band’s 8th first division rating in the last nine years at the Region UIL Contest.

Comments from the judges included, “Beautiful marching fundamentals, great uniformity. Super band! Great effort by the students!”

Earning the first division award qualified the band for the UIL Area Contest in Longview.

This was the first time the band advanced to the area level and placed 8th out of 18 bands from across the eastern part of the state.

“Our goal was to place in the top three because those bands got to advance to the UIL State Marching Contest in San Antonio, but we just did not score high enough this year. For our first year at this contest, I felt the kids did a super job,” stated band director Eric Gray.

The NAMMB Contest held at Stephen F. Austin was the band’s best performance of the year so far, earning a Superior Performance Trophy and placing 3rd in the Class 3A Division.

Judges comments included, “Band marches with good spirit, confidence and a very careful mastery of the drill. Impressive, good balanced sound! I really like the band’s intensity of sound as well as the quality.”

“I don’t know of a year when I have enjoyed a group of kids more than I have this year,” commented Gray. “It just seems that they knew what they wanted to accomplish and every day they got out there and worked for it.

“I’m especially proud of the way they stepped up after the region contest to participate with the ‘Big Dogs,’ so to speak, at the area and NAMMB contests,” he continued. “They were not intimidated by anyone.

“This is truly the best this band had to offer and they just went out there and did it,” stated Gray. “Now we play a lot for the folks on Friday nights, get ready for all region, solo and ensemble, concert and sightreading, spring concerts and our trip to New York which is going to be the trip of a lifetime for our kids.”
