Governor Perry to receive report from Scouts, after 61st annual downtown parade

AUSTIN – Nearly 6,000 Scouts from across Texas – a record number - are expected to parade through downtown Austin, and then update Governor Rick Perry on the community service performed by Scouting throughout the state, in the 61ST annual Report to State and Scout Parade.

The theme for the 2010 Report to State is “Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey”. This year’s parade and Report marks the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The United States Congress chartered the BSA in 1910, with Scouting officially coming to Central Texas in 1912. Since that time, the Scouting program in our area has grown to record numbers of membership (22,415 youth served) and adult leaders (8,250). In addition, the Capitol Area Council is celebrating another milestone: a record 347 young men earned the rank of Eagle Scout this past year – up from 2008’s record of 342 Eagles.

Round Rock I.S.D. Superintendent Jesus Chavez (an Eagle Scout) and heroic U.S. Army Medic Alan Babin will serve as the Scout Parade Marshals. High in the sky, Austin’s Falcon Flight experimental aircraft formation flying team will participate in the parade by performing three flyovers over the downtown Austin route. Also taking part are the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, The University of Texas’ Alpha Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Omega and more.

The 2010 Scout Parade begins at the Congress Avenue Bridge and will travel north to the Capitol. From there, a delegation of approximately 100 boys from regions all across Texas will make their “Report to State” to the Governor (himself a Distinguished Eagle Scout) inside House chambers.

WHEN: Saturday, February 6, 2010 – 9am-12:30pm

WHERE: Parade begins at Ann W. Richards Congress Ave. Bridge, passes reviewing stand at 7th & Congress, ends with youth delegations reporting on the floor of House chambers at the Capitol

VISUALS:

7:30am - Parade Marshals, Superintendent Chavez and Mr. Babin, will speak to Scouts inside the Central Texas delegation breakfast at the Radisson Hotel (Congress and Cesar Chavez)

8:00am – Scouts, Scout floats and other parade entries begin assembling on Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge

9:00am – Parade starts, featuring nearly 6,000 Scouts, Parade Marshals Chavez and Babin, the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, UT’s Alpha Phi Omega with the world’s largest Texas flag, & more.

9:15am – Falcon Flight formation flying team will make its first flyover of the parade route, traveling north up Congress Avenue past the Capitol (team will make two more passes after)

11:30am - Scouts from across Texas present their “Report to State” to Governor Rick Perry inside the House of Representatives
