MOUNT PLEASANT — From ancient nuclear wars, to the secret of sexual attraction, with stops along the way for Bigfoot, ancient demons, and the truth behind ancient alchemy's secrets, the imagination behind Lou Antonelli's short story collection “Fantastic Texas” is like a team of horses running wild.
The managing editor of the Mount Pleasant Daily Tribune, Antonelli has a second career as an up-and-coming science fiction and fantasy author, and “Fantastic Texas” is a reprint collection of 12 short stories published in some of the most prestigious science fiction and fantasy magazines in the U.S., Australia and England between 2003 and 2009.
“Fantastic Texas” is published by Fantastic Books, an imprint of Wilder Publications owned by Tir Na Nog Press, which puts out “Realms of Fantasy”, the largest fantasy magazine in the United States.
All the stories in “Fantastic Texas” are set in a Texas of some kind - although in some cases it is a secret, magical or “alternate” Texas. A Massachusetts native, Antonelli has lived in Texas 25 years, and his science fiction and fantasy reflects his fascination and affection for his adopted home.
The stories are set in Texas locales as varied as Dallas, Waxahachie and Enchanted Rock. A large number are set in East Texas - Antonelli's home for many years - in places such as Malakoff and Texarkana with stays along the way in Tyler and Nacogdoches as well as mythical cities such as Pineville and Chalybeate Springs.
A journalist since he was a teenager, Antonelli only took up fiction writing as a hobby when he was 45 in 2002, and by 2005 he had been published in Asimov's Science Fiction, one of the largest science fiction magazines in the world.
Since then his stories have been cited ten times in the honorable mentions list published annually in “The Year's Best Science Fiction” from St. Martins' Press in New York City.
A web site with summaries of the stories in the collection can be found at

Antonelli plans a series of signings and public appearances across Texas during 2010. “Fantastic Texas” is available via Barnes & Noble on-line as well as Amazon.com.
