NACOGDOCHES — Gilmer and New Diana High School marching bands came away with trophies from the annual marching contest sponsored by the National Association of Military Marching Bands here Nov. 1.
Gilmer’s band received a Superior Performance trophy and third place in Class 3A.
New Diana’s band received second place in Class 2A.
Several thousand applauded as students performed their marching routines during the contest, held at Stephen F. Austin State University’s beautiful Homer Bryce Stadium.
The event was hosted by the Music Department of SFA and the members of Beta Omicron Beta.
The contest featured the Gilmer band directed by Eric Gray and the New Diana band directed by George Little, plus 14 other military marching bands from six Texas UIL Music Regions.
Waymon Bullock, executive secretary of the association, was pleased with both the turnout of the number of participating bands and the large group of enthusiastic patrons at this, the sixteenth year for NAMMB to sponsor this event.
Bullock, along with a group of East Texas band directors, formed the association 23 years ago at a time when almost all the university and high school bands across the country had changed their format to the new “corps” show band style promoted by the “brass band” and “drum and bugle corps” groups popular in the Midwest and on the East Coast.
This small group of directors, fearing that the “military-style” marching unit, once rooted so deeply in the East Texas area, would soon fall into obscurity, founded the organization and adopted the following creed:
“Recognizing the importance and rich heritage of the precision marching unit, the National Association of Military Marching Bands hereby affirms to promote and preserve the military precision styles of performance of traditional march music from band literature.”
In addition to Gilmer, Superior trophies were presented to Hemphill, Spring Hill, Center, Cleveland, Vidor and Atascocita.
Each classification was awarded a first-, second- and third-place ranking.
They included:
Class 2A—1st, Hemphill; 2nd, New Diana; 3rd, Hughes Springs.
Class 3A—1st, Cleveland; 2nd, Spring Hill; 3rd, Gilmer.
Class 4A—1st, Vidor.
Class 5A—1st, Atascocita.

This is one of the New Diana DRum major and NAMMB was a very good experience for the bands , more bands should compete
