A search for a missing 2-year-old girl near Gladewater ended happily Wednesday.

Kayden Sue Rushing was discovered missing that morning by her mother, Betty Lou Croley, about 10:12 a.m. from her home on Willow Oak Road in southern Upshur County.

The call went out for all available Upshur County firefighters to come to the scene, at 2667 Willow Oak, and join in the search.

Law-enforcement personnel and other volunteers also congregated and began a coordinated, house-to-house search on that road and other nearby roads.

Main coordinator of the event was Gladewater Fire Chief Wayne “Snuffy” Smith.

Departments or agencies involved included Gilmer Fire Department, East Mountain Fire Deparatment, Gladewater Fire Department, Big Sandy VFD, East Mountain police, Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety, Gregg County K-9 unit, Texas Forest Service and East Texas Medical Center EMS.

East Texas Medical Center and Mother Frances Hospital sent helicopters to help in the search.

The International ALERT Academy from Big Sandy and Union Grove High School also sent teams, which arrived about the time the little girl was located.

About 70 are estimated to have been involved in the successful search.

By the time she was found, about a mile west of her home, she had been missing about four hours.

She was found by a neighbor, David Blalock, whose wife heard dogs barking. She looked out the window and told Blalock that “there’s a little naked girl with a dog in the driveway, and to call 9-1-1, which he did,” the Sheriff’s Office summary report stated.

A little white and brown terrier which had disappeared with her was still still by her side. It rode back home with her in the patrol car of DPS Trooper Wayne Cavanaugh.

He drove her back to the staging area in front of her house in his patrol car, with Gilmer fireman Billy Joe Williams holding her. After she was identified by her mother, she was treated for scratches and minor injuries by paramedics on the scene and turned over to her tearful parent.

It always seems easy to sit back and judge someone else, Mr. Stanley you are human like the rest of us and am sure you are not perfect-as matter of fact I know you are not perfect! You have no right to judge anyone. Obviously you do not have your own children and I am sure by your immaturity that is a good thing! As for the mother no one knows how she felt at the time unless you have been in her shoes, and as for the child I am glad she is safe and back with her family.

Mr. Stanley, Do you have children? My guess would be no because I feel that if you did you would know that this could very easily happen to anyone of us. We are all of God's children and none of us are any better than the next person! Kadin is very well taken care of, as well as loved very much! Much thanks goes out to every1 that helped bring Kadin home!!!!

I don't know any of these people at all, but I am very thankful this little girl was returned to her family safely. None of us have a right to judge this mother. If I had been in her shoes, I would have looked like hell also. Shame on you for insulting her appearance after what she's been through!

Mr. Stanley, I am Kadin's paternal grandmother and you do not need to be making any comments about Betty or this situation. If you would get all of the facts before making a negative comment like this it might not make you look so bad.

Betty is a good mother and takes very good care of Kadin. Of course Betty looks like she needs help, this picture was taken when Kadin was first found and returned to her parents.

Why can't you simply look at the fact that Kadin was found safe and not injured.

I am so grateful to all of the people who searched for my granddaughter. They showed the whole East Texas area that we still have humans around us.

I know what kind of shape Betty and my son Keith were in, this child is their life. You do not know my kids and how much this child is their life, so please refrain from making negative remarks.

Mr. Stanley< I live next door to these people and this mother was insane with fear for her child. She was running up and down the street screaming trying to find her baby.

She woke up in the morning at 8:00 am to find the baby missing.

If you've never lived in soneone's shoes then you have no right to make a sorry comment like that.

I hope CPS was called. That woman looks like they need to give her attention.
