Rain was ending Tuesday as October was poised to go into the record books as a higher-than-average rainfall month in a wet year.

Rain that began early Monday and continued off and on into Tuesday morning totalled 1.84 inches at the Gilmer airport weather station, bringing the month’s total there to 15.56 inches.

Total for the year there stands at 67.62 inches.

At the Gilmer Intermediate School automated weather station, 78.62 inches has been recorded in 2009.

Low temperature in the fall season has been 41 degrees, recorded early last Saturday. High was 91 degrees on Oct. 8.

Flood warnings remained in force Tuesday for the Sabine River near Gladewater and Little Cypress Bayou near Jefferson. Moderate flooding was taking place on the Sabine as the river continued to rise past the flood stage of 26 feet. Tuesday morning the stage was 34.8 feet.

National Weather Service predicted skies would clear across the region into Wednesday, allowing for a temporary break from the rain. But another storm system was forecast to provide significant rainfall throough much of the day Thursday into Friday morning. This slow-moving system was expected to enhance the chances for areawide flooding.

Once this system is pushed east to exit the region, a drier pattern will set up through the weekend into early next week with mild temperartures raning from lows in the 40s and 50s to highs in the 70s, NWS said.
