San Antonio, TX September 10, 2009 --
Hope4heroes.org is concerned about the current Veterans Administration budget and an estimated wasted of $100's of billions over the next ten years. It has been stated by Congress and the president that it will cost an estimated $900 over the next ten years to cover the nation's uninsured (estimated at 30-40 million).
The Veterans Administration budget for 2009 is 93.7 Billion and an estimated 1.3 trillion over the next 10 years; this reflects an average five percent per year increase in budget. Our worry is this:
With only 5.7 million veterans getting health care on average per year and 44% of the VA budget or $41.3 Billion devoted to health care we can't understand where the money is going?
How can it cost an estimated $500 billion over ten years to cover an estimated six million veterans yet we can cover 30 to 40 million uninsured for $900 Billion over the same ten years based on current Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and administration estimates?
It's our concern and request that a complete line item review of waste in the VA budget be completed this fiscal year. Further, that the indentified waste be used to fund the following areas.
1. Veteran's advocates that do not report to staff at the VA.
2. Increased staff to speed up care and lower waits times at emergency rooms.
3. Those veterans can use VA benefits at urgent care clinics for non-life threading illness.
4. Efficiency experts are hired to do line item accounting at each VA location and ID waste, excess and delays in services.
5. Additional waste is used with identified MEDICARE waste to fund coverage for all if the CBO estimate of $900 billion is correct.
6. Speed up disability and OIF/OEF claims by 60 days.
It's a must we seek answers to the 44% of the VA budget ($41.3 billion) devoted to health care given the clear waste serving just 5.7 million unique veterans. We feel everyone in America should have access to the care veterans receive but that it's completed in a waste free environment and it should be timely with options and alternatives when care cannot be provided due to crowded emergency rooms and understaffed hospitals.
