As WWII dragged on in 1944, a light-hearted song gave America a bright new look upon life. A romantic comedy named “Here Come the Waves” starring singer-actor Bing Crosby featured an upbeat song which had a message for those times:
You've got to AC-centuate the positive
E-liminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with Mister In-Between
You've got to spread joy up to the MAX-imum
Bring gloom down to the MIN-imum
Have faith or PAN-demonium
Liable to walk upon the scene
Written by Johnny Mercer, it was the kind of song that was said to give people “pep in their step!” Uplifting, encouraging, and relentlessly optimistic, it was just what the doctor ordered for America in 1944-1945. “Accentuate the Positive” won the Academy Award for best song.
America was involved in a real war on several fronts as it battled the forces of totalitarianism. The Axis powers of Germany, Japan and Italy launched wars all over the globe against the likes of the United States, Britain, Australia, and others. The Allies were the good guys, and we fought back against tyranny.
That has a familiar ring to it, except today we are all fighting against a worldwide attempt to subjugate us in our own countries – to deprive us of our life, liberty and pursuit of happiness by imposing worldwide economic and health tyrannies upon us.
It is important that we push back against those forces, that we assert our rights to freedom, that we let our voices be heard in opposition. But it is important in doing so to remember that positivity is the main ingredient which separates those of us who value freedoms from those who would steal our happiness from us. They do love droning on about every conceivable problem, laboring over the negatives as they wish to make our lives as miserable as theirs.
They push riots, arson, looting, intimidation, hatred and racial divides. We congregate in groups of thousands, cheering, singing, urging on our favorite sports teams, praising our God, sounding out the vibe which represents our positivity.
They dwell on real or imaginary problems, painting a world beset with gloom and doom, because they are merchants of fear, and seek to use such tactics to herd the terrified. We point out the value of cultural pride, of dedication to country, to values, to purpose, and to each other.
Remember to keep your positive attitude. It is what separates us from the hostility and tyranny of the leftists, socialists, communists, and fascists trying to overwhelm the good people of the world. Optimism is the bright sunshine which disinfects the world of the chronic gloom and doom evil people push.
