Internship Program Is Not About

Getting Coffee For The Boss

Doug Marshall’s brother gave him the inside scoop when it was time for Doug to choose an internship at Western Washington University. His brother had been in an internship called College Works Projects (CWP) and told him that if he did well in that program, he could succeed anywhere.

Doug was investigating internships at Microsoft, Boeing and several other companies - including a cologne manufacturer in Germany - but felt he should take his brother’s advice. So he decided to go with CWP  (, a program that offers internships that help undergraduate students gain real-life business management experience by running their own house-painting business.

That was eight years ago. Today, Doug is the International Marketing Manager at the Washington State Wine Commission.

“It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made,” he says. “I use what I learned at CWP every day here.” Doug says he especially utilizes the interviewing and sales techniques he learned in the program.

Doug excelled at CWP, and was named the first General Manager for CWP in British Columbia. He was promoted quickly due to his consistency as a top performer, selling over $100,000 and placing in the top 10 in sales - out of over 3,000 hired - in his first year. Following his initial success, Doug managed a team of branch managers, selling over $600,000 in his second and third years.

As the company's General Manager, Doug built from the ground up the first international division of College Works Painting in Vancouver, B.C.

Ranked as one of the top 10 internships in the nation by, and top 100 of over 100,000 by The Princeton Review, CWP has earned a reputation as one of the most challenging and rewarding internship programs in the United States and Canada.
