Students earn awards at 54th annual East Texas Regional Science Fair

Carissa Bruton of Winnsboro High School was awarded the top prize at the 54th annual East Texas Regional Science Fair at Kilgore College March 2.

Bruton’s project, “Circadian Rhythms of Pyrocystis Bioluminescent Dinoflagellates,” was awarded the top prize out of 152 projects.

She will be awarded an all-expense paid trip to Pittsburgh, Pa., to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), May 13-18.

Category winners (junior and senior divisions) will advance to the Texas Science & Engineering Fair in San Antonio, March 23-24.

Specialty awards were given for projects in engineering, psychology, chemistry, computer science and environmental science.

Students at the fair represented 30 elementary, junior high and elementary schools from 19 independent school districts.

Local science fair winners from area schools (grades 5-12) were invited to attend the competition.
