Give blood: Season of giving means giving life by donating blood
Marshall Visual Art Center, First Baptist Carthage sites of first annual Gift of Life blood drive with Carter BloodCare
MARSHALL/CARTHAGE, Texas (December 20, 2017) – The holiday season began with giving thanks and we are now in the throes of December’s Christmas and holiday festivities that continue until New Year’s Day for many people. In a time of year that can feel and be hectic, demanding and frenzied, Carter BloodCare encourages the community to slow down and give the best gift of all: life. The towns of Marshall and Carthage will host the Gift of Life blood drive to help boost the blood supply during a time of year when the blood supply is historically low.
The Gift of Life drive will be held at two locations:
The Marshall Visual Art Center venue of the blood drive is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 21, at 208 E. Burleson St. inside the building. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Charlotte Jordan at (903) 574-4998.
The First Baptist Church of Carthage venue of the blood drive is also open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 21, at 256 S Market St. in the activity building in the room on the right. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Belinda Murphy at (903) 574-4513.
All those that present to give blood will get a free t-shirt and some comfy Carter BloodCare socks.
Giving blood on behalf of a loved one undergoing medical care, in memory of a friend, or just to say thanks for good health, are life-saving reasons to donate blood. They are also reasons that our frequent blood donors say they keep coming back every 56 days.
It takes about an hour to give one pint of whole blood. Blood transfusion can do more than save a life – it can provide hope and renewed energy for folks who battle a chronic blood disorder, or undergo cancer and surgical treatments.
Remember to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water one to two hours before giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood.
Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
