East Texas Communities Foundation Announces Scholarships Available for East Texas Students

Tyler, Texas –East Texas Communities Foundation is currently accepting applications from East Texas students for fifty-one scholarships. Deadline for submission is February 1, 2018 at 5:00 p.m., unless noted otherwise.  All applications and supporting documents must be submitted online. A student may apply for every scholarship for which he or she meets the eligibility requirements. Applicants should complete a unique application for each scholarship. Three new scholarships have been established this year:



Helen Elbert Scholarship:This scholarship the memory of Mrs. Elbert, an outstanding piano teacher and musician. It will be awarded to an East Texas graduating senior who plans to major in music with a preference for piano majors.
Amount: $500.00

 

Michael J. McCormick Scholarship: This scholarship was created in memory of Michael by his friends and family. It will benefit graduating seniors at All Saints Episcopal School in Tyler, Texas. Their children attended All Saints Episcopal School and Stacy taught kindergarten there for 13 years.
Amount: $2,000.00



Rhonda Pendry Scholarship: Rhonda Penry was a dedicated teacher at Tarkington Intermediate School in Cleveland, Texas for 15 years with a career spanning 25 years in total. Her first students and her three sons, established this scholarship to honor her upon her retirement.
Amount: $500.00

 

Other scholarships being offered this year are:



A.D. and Mary Winston Scholarship: For a Smith County public school graduating senior planning to attend Texas A&M University.  Amount: $1,000.00



Adam Carroll Scholarship: For a Grand Saline High School graduating senior who has participated in high school athletics or cheerleading (Van Zandt, Wood or Smith County only). Amount:  $500.00

Alex Fleming Infinity Scholarship: For a graduating senior from Whitehouse High School who has participated in band for four years. Amount:  $1,500.00



Allen and Nancy Locklin Scholarship: For graduating seniors from Smith County attending the University of Texas at Tyler. Amount: $2,000 – renewable for a total of 5 years



Art Excellence Scholarship: For art majors, preferably non-traditional students, at the University of Texas at Tyler. Amount: $1,000



Ben and Florine Ramsey Scholarship: For graduating seniors or prior graduates of San Augustine High School. Amount: $750



Betty and Roy Erickson Scholarship: For graduating seniors from East Texas high schools with exceptional SAT/ ACT scores. Amount: $1,000.00


Brook Hill Founder’s Scholarship: Steve Dement created this scholarship to enable students attending the college preparatory school he founded, The Brook Hill School, to continue their education at Baylor University where he earned three degrees. Amount: $2,500.00



Carroll and Casey Gurganus Scholarship: The Carroll and Casey Gurganus Scholarship benefits outstanding students with financial need at Palestine High School. Amount: $2,500.00, renewable for a total of four years.



Christopher Lyon Memorial Scholarship: For art majors at the University of Texas at Tyler.

Amount: $1,000.00



Citizens 1st Bank/Perkins Family Foundation Scholarship: For children of State of Texas employees who are residents of Cherokee, Nacogdoches or Smith County.  Prior recipients may reapply.

Amount: $1,000.00



David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Scholarship for Vocational/Technical Study in Medically Related Fields: For East Texas students pursuing a vocational/technical associate’s degree or certificate in a medically related field. Amount: $1,500.00 - renewable for the length of the program.

 

David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Scholarship in Chemistry: For East Texas graduating seniors majoring in chemistry.  Amount: $3,000.00 - renewable for a total of 4 years



David G. and Jacqueline M. Braithwaite Scholarship in Medicine, Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine: For East Texas graduating seniors who plan to major in biology, mathematics, engineering or a related field which will allow them to pursue a career as a doctor, dentist, veterinarian, or biotechnologist. Amount: $3,000.00 - renewable for a total of 4 years



Dr. Elbert H. Caldwell Scholarship: For an East Texas resident wishing to pursue a career in a medically related field, with a preference for nursing. Amount:$2,500.00 - renewable for the length of the program.



Earl Campbell Tyler Rose High School Scholarship: For graduating seniors from Smith County high schools who exemplify the characteristics of Earl Campbell and are participating in varsity athletics.
Amount: $5,000.00



East Texas Geological Society Scholarship: For students pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in geology in the State of Texas. Must be a sophomore, or higher, in college at time of application. Amount: $2,000.00 - renewable for up to 2 years.



Frances Cowan Gibson Fine Arts Scholarship: This scholarship will be awarded to students pursuing fine arts studies as a major or minor or simply an elective. Applicants may be Smith County graduating seniors or prior graduates.Amount: $5,000.00



Frederick Michael Nachman Scholarship: For graduating seniors from Smith County public and private schools and Bellaire High School, Bellaire, Texas who have been accepted to attend the University of Texas at Austin and who plan to major in business.
Amount: $1,500.00



Gary Neel Memorial Scholarship: For a Robert E. Lee High School graduating senior who will be attending the University of Texas at Austin.  Amount: $3,000.00. Scholarship deadline is March 1, 2018.



Gerald and Charlie Stoker Memorial Scholarship: For a graduating senior from Winnsboro High School. Amount: $500.00



Gladys and Thomas “TB” Stewart Scholarship: For graduating seniors from Smith County and surrounding high schools. Amount:  $2,000.00 - renewable for a total of 4 years



Gladys and Thomas "T.B." Stewart Texas College Scholarship: For graduating seniors from Smith County schools who will be attending Texas College in Tyler, Texas. Eligible students of all races are encouraged to apply. Amount: $1,250.00, renewable for a total of four years.



Glenn and Vivian Prater Memorial Scholarship: For an Eagle Scout graduated or graduating from a high school in East Texas and Liberty County, TX who has been accepted to or is currently attending Texas A&M University. Amount: $1,000 – renewable for one additional year



Jean & Jim Gulley, Texas Tech Scholarship: Fora graduating senior or a previous graduate from a high school in East Texas or Quanah, TX who plans to attend Texas Tech University. Amount: $5,000 -renewable for a total of 4 years. Scholarship deadline is March 1, 2018.



J.M. Braithwaite TJC Nursing Scholarship: For East Texas students pursuing a nursing degree at Tyler Junior College. Amount:$1,000.00 – renewable for the length of the program



Juliette Low's Amazing Girls Scholarship: For a female student who is a graduating senior from a Smith County high school and is involved in Girl Scouting. Amount: $1,000.00



Kristen and Joey Seeber Scholarship: For a graduating senior from Robert E. Lee High School or John Tyler High School.  Amount:  $1,000.00



Kathy’s Kids Scholarship: This scholarship fund honors the life of Kathy Smith, who was born with a rare genetic condition. The scholarship provides educational scholarships to young women in the Longview area who, like Kathy, have faced challenges.  Amount:  $1,000.00



Lauren Lewis Scholarship: For a graduating senior from Robert E. Lee High School or All Saints Episcopal School of Tyler who is accepted to attend Texas A&M University. The deadline for this scholarship is April 1. Amount: $1,000.00. Scholarship deadline is March 1, 2018.



Leslie Reid Memorial Scholarship: For any female graduating senior in Henderson, Smith or Van Zandt County who has participated in horse shows. Amount: $1,000.00



Martha J. Critchfield Women in Finance Scholarship: This scholarship honors Martha J. Critchfield, the first licensed female stockbroker in Tyler, Texas. This scholarship will be awarded to a female East Texas graduating senior who plans to major in business in college. Amount: $500.00, renewable for a total of four years.



Natural Gas Society of East Texas Scholarship: For State of Texas college students at the undergraduate or graduate level who have declared a major which directly relates to the energy industry. Amount:  $1,000.00



Partners in Arts Scholarship: For Smith County graduating seniors planning on pursuing a degree in one of the performing or visual arts.  Amount: $1,000.00



Peace Officers and Firefighters Scholarship: For graduating seniors who are the children of an individual currently employed as a Peace Officer or professional Firefighter. Amount: $500.00



R. Don Cowan Music & Performing Arts Scholarship: This scholarship will be awarded to students pursuing music and performing arts studies (music, musical theater, and dance) as a major, minor or an elective.Amount: $5,000.00



Retail Merchants Association Scholarship: For graduating seniors from Smith County and select surrounding high schools who plan to major in business. Amount:  $1,000.00



Richard B. and Mary Lou Hamm Scholarship: For Bullard High School graduating seniors planning to attend the University of Texas at Tyler. Amount: $1,000.00 - renewable for a total of 4 years



Sharyland Utilities Scholarship: For a graduating senior from select high schools in Hunt, Collin, and Fannin County, Texas who plans to major in engineering.  Amount:  $400.00



Sherilyn A. Willis, M.D. Medical Scholarship: For a student attending medical school in the State of Texas.  Amount: $500.00



Smith County Baptist Ministers Scholarship: For dependent children of ordained ministers serving congregations that are members of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Prior recipients may reapply. Amount: $1,500.00



Tim King Memorial Scholarship: For a graduating senior from Robert E. Lee H.S. in Tyler who plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin and major in business. Amount: $3,000.00. Scholarship deadline is March 1, 2018.



Texas Rose Festival Scholarship: For a graduating senior at a Smith County high school or a current college student who graduated from a Smith County school. Amount: $500.00



Tyler Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association Scholarship: For children of current employees of the City of Tyler Police Department. Prior recipients may reapply. Amount: $1,000.00



Velma Lemons Future Teachers Scholarship: To honor the long-time teaching career of their mother, the children of Velma Lemons established this scholarship to assist students from Anderson, Cherokee, Gregg, Henderson, Rains, Rusk, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties who plan to major in education. Amount: $500.00



Vision for Your Future Scholarship: This scholarship supports Smith County students interested in entering the medical profession. To reflect the donor's gender and specialty, preference is for female students planning to study optometry, ophthalmology, or other eye-care related specializations. Amount: $1,000.00



Whitehouse Young Farmers Scholarship: This scholarship fund was established by an ag booster club to help students attend college who have participated in Agricultural Education while attending Whitehouse High School.Amount: $1,200.00



Winifred George Scholarship: For a graduating senior from a Smith County high school attending Abilene Christian University. Amount:  $1,000.00 - renewable for a total of 4 years
