FLORENCE, Ala. – Texas A&M University-Commerce quarterback Luis Perez has been nominated for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the Division II College Football Player of the Year. The list of candidates was announced Monday morning by the National Harlon Hill Award Committee.

Perez – a junior from San Diego, Calif. – is one of 42 candidates from across the nation in Division II football, and one of 11 candidates from Super Region Four.

He was named first team all-Lone Star Conference at quarterback this season, becoming the first Lion quarterback to earn that honor since Cole Cayce in 1996.

Through Saturday's first round playoff win over Colorado Mesa, Perez has completed 219-of-339 passes for 3,007 yards with 29 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He is only the third Lion trigger man to reach the 3,000-yard milestone in a season, and his 29 touchdown passes this season are also a new school record, surpassing Tyrik Rollison's 27 scoring passes in 2014.

He had seven games of over 250 yards passing and four games of over 300 yards passing, with a season-best 396 yards at Panhandle State. He had five touchdown passes in wins at Eastern New Mexico and UT Permian Basin.

At the end of the regular season, Perez led the Lone Star Conference in passing efficiency, passing yards per game, passing yards per attempt, passing yards per completion, and total offense. He ranks in the top 25 in the nation in six statistical categories after the first round of the playoffs.

Perez has led the Lions to an 11-1 mark so far this season, tying the school wins record and picking up their third consecutive and 23rd overall Lone Star Conference Championship. A&M-Commerce earned the program's first NCAA Division II Playoff win for the program since 1991 on Saturday and as the fourth seed in Super Region Four, hosted NCAA Division II Playoff action for the first time in 25 years.

A&M-Commerce takes on Grand Valley State in the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs on Saturday, November 26, at 1 p.m. EST (Noon CST) in Allendale, Mich. Information on tickets, watch parties, and more can be found at Playoff Central.
