Gilmer City Council hires Greg Hutson to manage city

The Gilmer City Council on Tuesday night named Greg Hutson as city manager effective Jan. 1.

Hutson, 57, was city manager of Sansom Park, near Fort Worth, from October 2013 until Aug. 31 of this year. He was chosen from 57 applicants, five of whom were interviewed by the council in recent weeks, to succeed retiring City Manager Jeff Ellington.

The council approved hiring Hutson as associate city manager effective Nov. 1 so he can work with Ellington before the current manager's retirement takes effect at year's end. Ellington has held the post nearly 12 years.

Hutson's annual salary was set at $85,000. He will also receive a benefits package, the details of which were not immediately announced.

The city manager-designate, who attended Tuesday's council meeting with his wife, Shana, told The Mirror he was attracted to the Gilmer post because he likes a "community feel where everybody kind of knows each other."

"I like the community on the (downtown) square," he said. Sansom Park has a population of 4,700, which is near Gilmer's population of about 5,000.

Hutson also said he liked what the city of Gilmer's website "projected" and that "it looks like the whole city focuses on the Buckeyes," a reference to the highly successful Gilmer High School football team which has won three state championships in the past 12 seasons.

Hutson noted that his background in city government stretches over a 28-year period. From 1988-1999, he handled information technology for the city of Arlington, and held that same type position for the city of Irving from 1999-2010, working from 2007-10 as information technology officer for the police department.

He was executive director of the Kennedale Chamber of Commerce from 2010-2012, then executive director of the Cultural District Alliance in Fort Worth from 2012-2013. He said the alliance attempted to "promote a healthy district for people to live, play and work."

Born in Fort Worth, Hutson grew up in Peaster (near Weatherford), and graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in accounting in 1995 and a master of public administration degree in 2011.

After Tuesday's meeting, Mayor Tim Marshall said the council unanimously selected Hutson because "All the paramaters we set out there, we felt like he fit in all those paramaters." They included being "well-rounded" and "a good manager," the mayor said.

"We had about 30 different questions that we asked each applicant" who was interviewed, and "we felt like that he answered our questions to the best of our satisfaction," said Marshall.

Hutson's wife is a fourth-grade teacher in Arlington ISD and they have two sons, Caleb, 23, and Joshua, 18.
