While not everyone is a fan of high school football, those who aren’t are outnumbered in a place like Gilmer, Texas.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” for a significant percentage of us and that must mean the Gilmer Buckeyes are about to kick off another great football season.

Tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. is when this year’s party will get started. The Buckeyes begin the season in Tyler against the Liberty-Eylau Leopards in the opening game of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Advance tickets are still on sale until 3 p.m. today at the Gilmer ISD Administration Building. (The ticket is good for admission to all four games of this weekend’s Classic.)

The season is being dedicated to the late Desmond “Dez” Pollard, a talented and popular Buckeye receiver who would have been a senior on this team. He passed away suddenly at the age of 17 on March 2. DEZign8 (pronounced like the word “designate”) is something you’ll be seeing a lot in the next few months. It is the motto the team has chosen to honor Dez this season.

As Coach Jeff Traylor often says, the most important thing (aside, of course, from always displaying high character and class on and off the field) is for the Buckeyes to have fun. When you are having fun, you are also probably going to win a lot and vice versa. It has always been a virtuous circle with his teams and with our entire community.

As proof of that, MaxPreps earlier this month ranked the Gilmer Buckeyes as the 11th most dominant high school football program in Texas since 2004. Yes, it looks like the Buckeyes have been having a lot of fun. Few have mastered the FUNdamentals of football better than the Orange and Black.

See you in Tyler and GO BUCKEYES!
