I am writing to thank the Gilmer first responders for the thoroughly professional assistance provided to my wife, Dianne, and I, after our car accident on Thursday, July 17, at the intersection of US 271 and Hwy 300. We were hit hard from behind while waiting for the red light on 271N. I was completely unhurt, but Dianne immediately complained of extreme back pain. Gilmer police arrived within minutes of my 911 call, and an ambulance crew shortly after. While waiting for the ambulance a man identifying himself as an ex-paramedic climbed into the back seat of our car and began pulling Dianne's head back from the base of her spine and held her that way until the ambulance crew got a neck brace on her. The emergency room nurse later told me that can prevent total paralysis. Fortunately, Dianne's injuries turned out to be minor, but that does not lessen our appreciation for the professionalism and kindness shown to us that day. To the policemen on the scene, the ambulance crew, and the paramedic who volunteered a few minutes of his time to help, I say God bless you, for you are doing His work.
