Longview Habitat to hold Mortgage Burning Celebration

The Carter family has paid off their Habitat mortgage! Longview Habitat is joining the family on Thursday July 10th at 5:30pm to commemorate the significant milestone with a mortgage burning ceremony at their home.

In 1992 Brenda Carter was a single Mom with three young children, working two jobs and living in a small low-income apartment in a section of the city known for high crime. In fact her apartment was burglarized three times in the seven years.   She continually feared for her children’s safety.  Her family’s life changed dramatically the day that she met Ms. Ruby Canada who introduced her to the Habitat homeownership program and prayed with her and for her during the application process.

“I worked sweat equity hours every Saturday and two evenings each week for months to reach 350 hours and to save for my down payment.” Carter said. “But, finally, in 1993 we moved into a new house!  Now, twenty years later, I still can’t believe I really did it.  It wasn’t easy and I went through some hard times over the years, sometimes I wanted to give up, but the Habitat staff and the grace of God helped me fight the battles.”

What’s next for the Carter family?  Brenda plans to make some home improvements so that she can care for her aging mother in her home. She also wants to help future Habitat families build homes.

“This is a wonderful example of the long-term benefits of providing a hand up in attaining   financial security and family stability, today.” said La Juan Hollis, Executive Director.  “Brenda’s commitment to her family, the continued support of Habitat, and the generosity of a community of givers and volunteers has successfully broken the cycle of poverty and empowered three generations of the Carter family – Brenda, her children and her Mom, who will soon share Brenda’s home.”

Longview Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, build communities and build hope in our city.  Since 1985,   86 families have been welcomed to their new home; nine thus far have completed their 15-25 year mortgage commitment.  Last year 51 families were assisted through Habitat building, repair and beautification programs, carried out in large part by 600 community volunteers.  Give or Volunteer today!   To learn more, call 903-236-0900 ext. 204 or visit the website athttp://www.longviewhabitat.org/
