KILGORE, TEXAS—The Region 7 Education Service Center’s child nutrition department is hosting its annual workshop for school food service personnel from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 22-23 at the ESC located at 1909 N. Longview St. in Kilgore.
The two-day workshop will feature more than 15 different learning opportunities in the areas of compliance, grants, menu planning, promoting and funding great ideas, professional skills for directors, social media, food production records, Excel®, eligibility and applications, meal patterns, and using the cafeteria as a classroom. Two sessions, customer service and kitchen math, will be offered in Spanish.

“The learning opportunities our school food service personnel will have access to through this workshop are invaluable because they will gain clarification on compliance areas of the child nutrition program based on United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) requirements,” said Region 7 ESC’s child nutrition coordinator Julie Farris. “Attendees will also benefit from getting the most current information regarding the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP), as well as ideas on how to enhance their programs.”
Participants can choose to attend one of nine sessions on the first day of the workshop, which will last the full day. On the second day, participants can choose one of 10 sessions to attend the first part of the day. The afternoon session of the second day will feature keynote speaker Dayle Hayes. Lunch will be provided for attendees on the second day.
Hayes, an award-winning author and educator, is also creator of schoolmealsthatrock.org, which serves as a resource to child nutrition professionals, as well as shows people the positive side and benefits of school meal programs.
“Dayle is a wonderfully entertaining speaker with great information and techniques about how good nutrition and a fun environment can increase meal participation,” said Region 7 ESC child nutrition specialist Karen Tutt. “Our goal is to ensure all of our schools are maximizing their resources and services to support all students so they live healthy lives. Dayle’s presentation is one that all of our food service personnel should take advantage of.”
For the first time, this year’s workshop will also offer the Texas Association of School Nutrition (TASN) Manager Academy, which is a four-day course that gives participants the opportunity to earn a TASN certification after completion of the training and exit exam. The training will be held July 21-24 at the ESC, and participants must register separately through the TASN website at http://www.tasn.net/index.html?page_id=916.
Participants can also visit with approved Region 7 child nutrition software vendors including Computer Systems Design, Inc., Cybersoft, and Heartland School Solutions who will be present throughout the workshop to share information about their products and services.
“This is not just a great learning opportunity,” said Tutt. “This is also a time for our food service personnel to network and share new ideas and best practices with their colleagues.”
