NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA- The world's largest travel website named Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile the number one attraction in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

This week, TripAdvisor awarded the old hardware store the "Certificate of Excellence" for being the number one attraction in Natchitoches.

Luke Frederick, president of Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile, said, "We are honored to be recognized as the number one attraction in Natchitoches by TripAdvisor. Our historic business is fortunate to serve as an attraction, as well as a wonderful shopping experience.”

In 2013, Kaffie-Frederick General Mercantile celebrated its 150th anniversary making it the oldest general store in Louisiana.

To escape religious persecution they faced in Europe, Adolph and Harris Kaffie, who were Jewish Prussian immigrants, decided to follow the footsteps of other Jewish community members and establish their own small business.

In the early 1860's, the Kaffie brothers began a lucrative "door-to-door" small business selling household items. After great success, the brothers opened their first brick and mortar location in 1863 on Front Street in downtown Natchitoches. Thirty years later in 1893, the business moved into its present location where it has remained since.

Currently run by a third generation of Fredericks, Kaffie-Frederick has managed to endure a great number of hardships, beginning with the store’s inception in the midst of the American Civil War, the Great Depression and two World Wars.

The store has seen the products change over the decades, but the store has since maintained its original appearance. The store is a shopper's paradise with items ranging from house wares, hardware, cooking ware, classic toys, gardening and landscaping tools and a ladies boutique.

Located in the heart of downtown Natchitoches, the store is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Other attractions in Natchitoches who ranked in the top ten are Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum and the Cane River National Heritage Area.

More than 260 million travelers visit TripAdvisor each month, making it the world's largest travel website.
