After having been postponed for eight days due to weather concerns and school schedules, the Pine Tree Pirates met the Gilmer Buckeyes in 7on7 action at Buckeye Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The games provided a tune up for the varsity squad in preparation for today’s trip to Texas A&M -Commerce to participate in an SQT (State Qualifying Tournament). The Buckeye varsity will then close their 7on7 regular season by hosting a 7on7 SQT at Buckeye Stadium next Saturday, June 14. The games were the final games of the season for the JV, 8th grade and 7th grade teams.

The Buckeye first unit won their first game of the afternoon 41-3. They took a break while the second unit bested the Pirates 28-8. The first unit then played a final game, claiming a 44-8 win.

Quarterback McLane Carter, along with receivers Quinn Fluellen, Kris Boyd and Chase Tate demolished the overpowered Pirate defense, and Buckeye defenders wreaked havoc on the Pirate offense as Kollin Hurt had two big interceptions and Kris Boyd added another.

The Gilmer Junior Varsity also handily won their two games against the Pirate JV, and the 7th and 8th grade teams won both their contests as well. The 8th grade’s first game was close, but a late score gave the Buckeyes a 17-13 victory.

The Mirror will have full coverage of the Varsity SQT results in Commerce in next Wednesday’s edition.
