GHS seniors to graduate Friday

Gilmer High School, Harmony High School, New Diana High School and Union Grove High School will hold graduation ceremonies Friday, June 6.

Union Hill High School Class of 2014 will graduate Thursday, June 5.

Graduation at Ore City and Big Sandy High Schools was held on Friday, May 30.

Information on the time and place of each school’s graduation ceremonies, along with biographies of their valedictorians and salutatorians, follows.


Gilmer High School’s graduation ceremony is set for 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Buckeye Stadium.

Class valedictorian is Cassandra Galeano, daughter of Luz and Ricardo Galeano. She graduates with a GPA of 4.4063.

Miss Galeano plans to attend Duke University.

Among her high school honors are: Choir, 4 years; All-Region Choir, 3 years; Choir State Solo and Ensemble, 3 years; Student Council, 4 years; NHS, 3 years; NHS President 2013-14; Interact Club; Spanish Club; Drill Team, 2 years; Model UN; and National Hispanic Scholar; Globe Scholar; UIL Math and Science teams.

Salutatorian of the class is Steven Holeman, son of Melissa and Jeffrey Holeman, who graduates with a GPA of 4.3814.

He plans to attend LeTourneau University.

He is a Globe Scholar; member of the NHS; Student Council; AP Scholar; National Society of High School Scholars; Model UN, 3 years; 1st place in Resolution Writing and 2nd place Delegation, Senior year; Band, 2 years; UIL, State in Science, Math, Writing and Spelling.


Harmony High School graduation for the Class of 2014 will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Eagle Stadium.

Valedictorian of the Harmony Class of 2014 is Elissa Irvin with a 101.2280 GPA. She is the daughter of Debbie and Clay Irvin.

Miss Irvin has participated in numerous extracurricular activities including Key Club, Student Council, FCA, FFA, and the National Honor Society. She served as the Vice-President of her senior class as well as Miss Harmony.

Some of her high school achievements include a state championship in Forestry, serving as the Area 6 Association First Vice-President, and placing third at the state competition in Chapter Conducting. Miss Irvin has also been on state qualifying teams including Dairy Cattle, Agricultural Advocacy, Agricultural Issues, and Senior Prepared Public Speaking.

She plans on attending Texas A&M University and obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Agri-Business.

Salutatorian, Jodi Hoelscher, is the daughter of Pam and Phil Hoelscher. She has a 99.8260 GPA. She plans to attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, and study mathematics. She has been very active throughout high school.

Her athletic accomplishments include four years on varsity volleyball, four years on varsity softball, three years on varsity basketball, regional qualifier in track and powerlifting, with many All District honors. Her UIL academic achievements include numerous awards in C-X debate, LD debate, and mathematics contests.

She has served her classmates at Harmony High School as the junior class treasurer and the senior class president as well as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle leader. Throughout high school she has tutored many students in math.

Jodi is an active member of Soules Chapel United Methodist Church.

New Diana

Graduation seniors at New Diana High School will receive their diplomas in ceremonies at 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at LeTourneau University’s Belcher Center in Longview.

Christy Hjorth is New Diana’s valedictorian and Michael Plants is the salutatorian.

Christy’s mom is Paula Hjorth and Michaels parents are Randy and Frances Plants.

Christy is going to UT Tyler to study Chemistry and Michael is going to the University of North Texas and is studying Chemical and Computer Engineering.

Ore City

Ore City High School Graduation was held at 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the Ore City Rebel Stadium.

Valedictorian Aaron Holder, son of Kevin and Patty Wright, plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station in the Fall to study Biomedical Science.

Mr. Holder was involved in the following: Student council-Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) District 19 President, Student Body President, Senior class Treasurer, Drill Captain (Band), Senior Class Representative (Band), Tennis Captain, UIL Science Team, UIL Mathematics, and UIL Current Events Team, TMSCA Mathematics and Science team, Varsity Football, Varsity Tennis, High School Band, Section leader (band), Solo & Ensemble State Contest, Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) Team Leader, Spanish Club; UIL Regional Qualifier-Mathematics and Science, TMSCA State Qualifier in both Math and Science in all four years of high school, Solo & Ensemble state Qualifier;

His volunteer activities include: Student Council all four years, Crush Cancer 5K event for Texas Oncology Foundation, as well as numerous other fundraisers, ORE CITY HIGH SCHOOL-Donating Blood through Carter Bloodcare, Volunteering at the Special Olympics; United Methodist Army Mission; and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference

Salutatorian August McBride, daughter of Trudy Bellew and Jerry McBride, plans to attend Going to Texas A&M University.

Ms. McBride was involved in the following: Varsity Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball, Volleyball Co-Captain, Softball Captain, Student Council Sr. Class Representative, Spanish Club, FCA, TMSCA, UIL VASE, UIL Computer Apps, Tech Squad, All-State Academic Volleyball, All-District 2nd team Volleyball, All-District Academic in Volleyball, Basketball, and Softball.

Honor graduates are Madison Cross, Cari Morris, Valorie Humphrey, Stone Escobedo, Megan Howell, Katlynn Ellis, Sierra Verratti, and Cody Fette.

Union Grove

Union Grove Commencement Exercises will take place on June 6 at Glynn Johnson Stadium at 8 p.m.

Valedictorian of the Class of 2014 is Ashley Grace Gordy, daughter of Chris and Amanda Gordy. She has remained on the Distinguished Honor Roll and in the Top 10 percent of her class all four years. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Vice-President of her senior class, and President of the Union Grove FFA Chapter.

Ashley has competed in numerous UIL events during high school. Her senior year she was voted Most Likely to Succeed, Football Sweetheart, Homecoming Queen, and Miss UGHS. She received the Biology, Accounting, Chemistry, Creed Speaker, Spanish, AP Biology, and Systems Go Awards throughout high school. As Co-Captain of the Varsity Cheer Squad, she has also participated in Varsity Volleyball, Cross Country, and Track.

She received the Academic All-State Award and All-District Honorable Mention in Volleyball. Ashley has competed at the State level in Senior Creed Speaking through FFA for three consecutive years finishing as a Top Ten State Finalist. She was also named a High School Aerospace Scholar (HAS) by NASA her junior year, served as the Project Manager of her team of scholars at NASA, and was selected to be the main speaker at NASA’s closing ceremonies for the HAS Program.

This year, she won the Yamboree Essay Competition.

Ashley will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall and plans to earn her degree as a pediatrician.

Salutatorian Dusty White is the son of Richard and LaDonna White. In addition to his academic endeavors, Dusty is engaged in various extracurricular activities. He has been an active member of the FFA since his freshman year, and has advanced to state in the poultry judging CDE every year. Dusty is the present Treasurer of the National Honor Society. As a junior, he attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. He was also chosen as a Rotary Student of the Month in November.

Throughout high school, Dusty has maintained perfect attendance and achieved a GPA of 106.11818. This year, he was voted Most Likely to Succeed and Most Studious. Since his junior year, Dusty has participated in the Union Grove High School Aerospace Program, and has traveled to NASA where he interacted with professional engineers.

Dusty is passionate about community service, and has volunteered at Good Shepherd Medical Center and Longview Community Ministries.

Dusty has received a full-tuition scholarship from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he plans to major in Psychology.

Honor graduates are Ashley Gordy, Dustin Neal White, Katie Davidson, Cheyenne Chasteen, LaKyn Stanley, Logan Henderson, Sam West. April Bass, Shannon Dodson, Sam Brewer, Molly Jasper, Garrett Klein, Jenny Hart, Kayla Wagner, Amanda Booth, Haley Dinsdale, Jessica Sobey, Brittany Grice, William Schnelle and Tyler Owens.

Union Hill

Union Hill High School graduation for the Class of 2014 will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the school’s new gymnasium.

The 2014 Valedictorian is Guadalupe Suarez, with a GPA 3.52. Guadalupe is the grandson of Hilda and Armand Nelms.

Guadalupe’s achievements include: National Honor Society Member, Model United Nations delegate, “Mock Trial” participant (character witness), “Heroes on Duty” service organization, Drama Club, Academic UIL participant, Gifted and Talented Program, Certification in the EVERFI program, class president (4 years), Commended in all Exit-Level TAKS tests, Homecoming King, and Mr. U.H.H.S. 2013-2014.

Guadalupe attended Northeast Texas Community College his Junior and Senior years of high school and has completed 24 college hours.

Guadalupe has received “The State of Texas Honor Graduate Certificate” and has been declared the highest ranking graduate of the Senior class of 2014 at Union Hill High School, and is entitled to any awards pursuant to this honor. Guadalupe plans to attend the University of Texas at Arlington to pursue a career in architecture.

The 2014 Salutatorian is Alicia Martinez, having a GPA 3.46. Alicia is the daughter of Adela Martinez and Heladio Martinez.

Alicia’s achievements in high school include: Outstanding Achievement in Reading, 2011; English III, Most Committed, 2013; UHHS Choir member; and certification in OPAC office skills courses.

Alicia plans to attend TSTC in Marshall and pursue a career in medical office technology.

Big Sandy

Big Sandy High School Graduation is set for 8 p.m. Friday, May 30, at Wildcat Stadium.

Valedictorian is Miss Deanna Blood, daughter of Sean and Jennifer Blood.

She plans to attend Texas A&M University this fall.

Salutatorian of the Class of 2014 is Miss Terry Caldwell, daughter of Cindy Skrobarcek-Caldwell and Henry Caldwell.

Miss Caldwell also plans to attend Texas A&M University.
