LETU SUMMER CAMPS FOR KIDS BEGIN MONDAY, JUNE 9

            (LONGVIEW, Texas)—Enrollment is underway for LeTourneau University’s 2014 Summer Camps for students entering grades K-12.  Academic camps include acting, art, robotics, science, fun and skills. Sports camps include camps for a variety of levels of skill in baseball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and soccer.

Week-long academic camps will run through  Friday, June 27,  and athletic camps will run through Friday, July 17.  These camps are designed to help students enjoy hands-on learning and skill development opportunities throughout the summer.

            “Our pre-camp enrollment is going great and we have already filled several camps,” said Marty Lane, LETU director of Conference and Event Services. “The ever-popular robotics camps are already beginning to fill up.”

LEGO Robotics camps allow campers to build and program LEGO robots guided by Janice Park and Paula Hjorth, both professional teachers of robotics.

Several camps are offered for both the new and experienced camper, ranging from “LEGO Beginners” for grades 2-4 to “LEGO Engineers Pumped Up” for grades 5-12.

Acting camps include the drama and cinema camps taught by Doris Collier: “Stage Struck” June 23-27, “Camp’s Got Talent” June 16-20, “Movie Makers” June 9-13 and “Stage Fun” June 16-20. Collier has been leading popular summer campus at LETU for many years for grades K-12. 

Art camps include “The Painting Party” June 23-27, “3D Art” June 16-20, “Tape Art” June 9-13, “Cool Creations” June 16-20, “Wild World of Arts & Crafts” June 9-13, “Adventures in Art” June 9-13, “Cartoon & Comic Club” June 16-20 and “Artsy Animals” June 23-27.

A few science and space camps will be taught by returning camp instructor Lee Wilkinson: "LeTourneau Space Camp" June 16-20, “Slime Ka-Boom” June 16-20 and “Incredible Stuff” June 9-13 and June 23-27.  Wilkinson is an Illinois-based professional camp director who travels the world entertaining and educating children grades 2-8.

Lance Homeniuk, a science teacher for 25 years, will teach “Insane Science” June 23-27 and “Jr. Engineers” June 16-20. Tammy Baker teaches science camps to younger campers which include “Super Science” June 9-13 and “Super Science 2” June 23-27.

Professional manners expert Amy Riestenberg will teach the skills camp “Say ‘No Thank you’ to Bad Manners!” June 16-20. “Police Academy” is offered June 9-13 and “Police Academy 2” June 23-27.

Other skill camps include: “Reading Rocks!” June 16-20, “Basic First Aid and Survival Skills” June 9-13, “Survival Skills (Level 2)” June 16-20 and “Creative Writing” June 9-13.

For those interested in airplanes, flight camps include “Flight: Pre-Flight” June 9-13 and “Flight: Pilot” June 16-20. For the younger flight enthusiasts, “Airplane Camp” is offered on June 23-27 for grades 3-6.

Returning history camps include “Medieval Times” June 16-20 and “Ancient Roman Adventures” June 9-13. Other fun camps include “Smorgasbord” June 23-27, “Camp Wackypalooza” June 9-13, “Just Like Me!” June 16-20, and “Kid’s Architecture” June 23-27.

Athletic camps for various ages and skill levels will be directed and taught by LETU coaches and student-athletes in baseball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and soccer.  Sports camps offer basic skill development and extend to teach the finer points of the games, depending upon the skill levels of the campers. 

One-on-one instruction and team strategy is incorporated in all camps. Junior high and high school campers will receive instruction aimed at skill development for their school teams.
