Talking points

IN RECENT years we hear the phrase: “talking points.” This is especially true in the realm of politic. Just what does it mean? It has to do with a major emphasis or argument an individual or group wants to promote. This is often how a political party or a branch of government advances what it wants to sway public opinion with. In such situations astute citizens might want to dig a little deeper; maybe, so to speak: “read between the lines.”

The major news media has been guilty for many years of either attempting to make news or promoting an agenda to their own liking. It goes beyond an editor of a newspaper expressing his opinion on the editorial page. Sometimes they sound like Polly parrots repeating the same thing in promoting what they want the public to hear. Causes one to wonder if they got behind closed doors and decided what they want to promote, rather than simply report the news. They are often guilty of “doctoring up” the news instead of reporting it as it is and “letting the chips fall where they will.”

IT IS natural for all of us to place emphasis upon that in which we want others to accept. Perhaps related to “talking points” is “selling points.” The term “selling points” has to do with buying and selling of goods. It is to place emphasis upon desirable qualities of the merchandise. That will come more causing a potential buyer to shell out his or her hard earned cash.

“Selling points” might be the location of a house up for sale; or its selling price.
