There was one weather-related death in Upshur County as storms passed through Saturday night and Sunday morning. Al Raabe, 78, died when his car was swept off Fox Road while he was on his way to church.
A woman on FM 556 was rescued from her car, which was flooded out, by the efforts of the Gilmer Fire Department.
Chief Mike Melton blocked off a section of FM 2263 because of high waters and Tuesday drivers were cautiously crossing Texas Hwy. 155 at FM 726.
On Tuesday morning, White Oak Road near Persimmon and Weeping Willow was blocked off because of flooding of White Oak Creek.
Authorities urge drivers not to attempt to drive through roads which are under water.
Heavy rains fell in parts of the county. Bill Starnes, who lives near the south side of Lake Gilmer, said he measured five inches in his rain gauge.
The automated weather station at the Gilmer airport recorded 4.81 inches.
The heaviest downpours occurred while most people slept between 2 and 5 a.m. Sunday. Spectacular lightning occurred during the storms may have been the cause of a house fire on Scott Street in the pre-dawn hours Sunday.
“We were fortunate that we never lost service during that lightning,” D.P. Mooney of Gilmer Cable Television said afterwards.
