The Blood of the Lamb
Pastor Steve Ellison
Exodus 12 describes the selection of the Passover Lamb, the requirements for the Passover Lamb, how to eat the Passover Lamb, and the symbolism of the blood of the Passover Lamb. The New Testament tells us that the sinless Christ is our unblemished Passover Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. The word blood is found twenty-seven times in the book of Exodus. Nineteen of those refer to the blood of the sacrificial lamb, six of which are in chapter 12. Exodus 12 describes the symbolism of the blood of the sacrificial lamb and the New Testament certifies that it is a picture of Christ’s sacrificial blood to be shed at the right time. (1 Peter 1:2, Hebrews 9:13-14, Romans 5:8) Hebrews 10:29 adds a word of warning to the picture, “How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? (NASU)
Exodus 12:7, 22 paint the picture, “They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. … You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning.” (NASU) It seems to me that the double mention of the basin which serves as the container for the sacrificial blood is an indication of the unlimited supply, which will never run dry. The New Testament tells us that Christ’s sacrificial blood is sufficient to cover the sins of the whole world, i.e. every person. (John 3:16-17, Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13, 1 Timothy 2:4, 1 John 2:2, 1 Timothy 4:10) The fact that the sacrificial covering blood must come from the basin is testimony that there is only one way to being made right with God. Christ is the only way. The teaching that “all rivers lead to the same ocean” is simply not true. Any attempt to cover over your sin except with the blood of Christ is an insult to God and doomed to fail.
Verse 7 and verse 22 speak of applying the blood. The blood is of no use unless it is taken out of the basin and applied to your life. None of us wants to dirty our own house. Blood is very difficult to remove. It would take a lot of faith for me to be willing to take a hyssop branch and use it to smear blood on my front door. Christ’s sacrificial blood is sufficient to cover every sin of every person who has ever lived or will live. There is a ready supply but it must be applied by faith, otherwise I am still lost in my sins. These two verses give clear instruction about where the blood is to be applied. It is to be applied in such a way that the rest of the world can see it. Nowhere does the Bible speak of “closet Christians”. The Bible always speaks of public faith in Christ. Jesus said that if we deny Him in front of men, He will deny us in front of the Father. Romans tells us that “confession with our mouth” results in salvation. Revelation says that the mark of the Beast can be on the forehead or hand but the sealing of the Christian is on the forehead. The blood of Christ cannot be applied in secret. Secret faith is no faith at all...……..…..firstname.lastname@example.org
