April 29, 2014 (TYLER, TX) – Volunteers will be the focus of an annual celebration to be hosted by Meals on Wheels Ministry (MOWM) and held at the organization’s central location in Tyler at 3001 Robertson Road on Friday, May 2nd. The annual Volunteer Appreciation Celebration is sponsored by local businesses and is a come and go event held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Volunteers from all over the organization’s six county service area are invited to stop in and be honored for the work they do to improve the lives of their neighbors in need.

We could not meet the need in our community without the help of our volunteers,” said Mike Powell, President/CEO of Meals on Wheels Ministry. “We have over 1,000 volunteers throughout our service area, and we estimate that their efforts save Meals on Wheels Ministry at least $750,000 a year in labor and fuel costs. That accounts for a lot of meals being served to homebound elderly and disabled citizens.” The Tyler site holds a one-day celebration open to all MOWM volunteers and each individual site also organizes its own celebration for local volunteers.

Support from local businesses and restaurants make this event possible. Sponsors for the 2014 events are Chick-Fil-A, Kelly Community Federal Credit Union, Southside Bank, Anonymous, Cynergy Technology, Pocket Friendly Promotions, Starbucks, Hall Buick GMC, SWBC Professional Employer Organization, Walgreens, KETK NBC 56, KLTV Channel 7, The Ranch 104.1, Sunny 106.1, KYKX 105.7, and KYTK CBS 19.

Food has been donated by Cheng’s China Bistro, Cotton Patch Café, Daniel Boones, Jalapeno Tree, Sam’s Club Café, Starbucks Coffee, TGIFriday’s, and Villa Montez. “The support from local businesses truly makes this event possible and enables Meals on Wheels Ministry to offer a very special and much deserved thank you to the people who make our mission possible,” said Mr. Powell.

Meals on Wheels Ministry currently serves over 3,000 seniors and homebound individuals in 30 communities across six counties including Gregg, Henderson, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood counties. Meals on Wheels Ministry is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing good nutritious meals, daily contacts, and other support services that enable senior citizens and disabled persons to remain independent and living in their own homes as long as possible.
