The Bruce Junior High 7th and 8th Grade Bands earned “Sweepstakes” Awards at UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest on April 16 at Gladewater High School.

This is the fourth consecutive year that both bands have earned this honor.

Both bands performed three pieces of music on the concert stage that they had spent months preparing. They were evaluated by three UIL judges, and both groups earned straight ones from the panel in this portion of their evaluation.

From there, each band competed in the sightreading portion of the event. This is where each band is given a brand new piece of music they have never seen before to perform for a different panel of judges.

The band has seven minutes to work on the sightreading music with their director’s help, but they are not allowed to play a single note on their instruments during this time. After those seven minutes the band has one chance to perform the music to the best of their ability.

Both bands once again came away with a First Division rating for their performance of the sightreading music.

To earn a “Sweepstakes” award a band must earn a First Division in both the concert and sighteading portions of the competition.

With these two Sweepstakes awards, the Gilmer ISD Band program can once again claim a sweep at UIL competitions, as all three performing ensembles have received the highest possible recognition at these contests during the 2013-2014 school year.

The BJHS 7th Grade Band is directed by Joshlyn Marsh, and the BJHS 8th Grade Band is directed by Chris Witt.
