The Journey to the Cross is commemorated this week at First United Methodist Church in Gilmer. Sunday, April 13 is Palm Sunday, a day when Christians celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week which concludes on Easter Sunday.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem the week before his death and resurrection, crowds of people greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches. On Sunday, April 13, the children will begin the church service, entering the sanctuary bearing palm branches in celebration. Children who wish to participate in this event should be in the foyer by 9:45 AM.

Thursday, April 17, is Maundy Thursday. This day commemorates the last supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. Beginning at 6:00 PM, there will be a choir/orchestra performance of “Song of the Shadow” followed by worship and communion.

Good Friday is on April 18. The church building will be open from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM for “come-and-go” meditation and communion.

The journey to the cross ends on Easter Sunday with a celebration of the resurrection. A sunrise service will be held at 7:00 AM in the Prayer Garden. Sunday school for all ages is at 9:00 AM and the traditional Easter service will be celebrated at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary.

Children’s Church will begin at approximately 10:15 in the Christian Life Center. There will be a special presentation by the Puppets for Jesus featuring the Easter story as well as games and prizes.

The First United Methodist Church is located at 105 North Montgomery Street in Gilmer. We are a loving supportive family of faith, working together to share God’s love. Everyone is welcome to attend these services.
