Hoeksema retired in 2009 as chairman of the board of Midwest Air Group and chairman, president, and CEO of Midwest Airlines in Milwaukee. The airline prides itself on offering travelers “The Best Care in the Air,” based on a unique combination of personal service and competitive pricing.
“Much like our founder RG LeTourneau, Mr. Hoeksema has an amazing story of serving God through his business,” said LETU Dean of Aeronautical Science Fred Ritchey. “I know our students will be inspired by his story of faith and work.”
Hoeksema’s career began as a flight instructor for the University of Illinois before joining Kimberly-Clark Corporation in 1969 as a first officer, captain and then chief pilot of the company’s air transportation operations. He was appointed to the dual position of director of air transportation for Kimberly-Clark and president of K-C Aviation, its aircraft maintenance/refurbishing subsidiary in 1977.
As the concept for Midwest Airlines was developed and it prepared for its inaugural service in 1984, Hoeksema was named chairman, president, and CEO of the fledgling venture. He was appointed president of Kimberly-Clark’s transportation sector in 1988. He led a successful public offering when Kimberly-Clark divested its interest in the airline in 1993.
After years as a publicly held company, the airline was purchased by TPG Capital in 2008, returning it to being a privately held entity.
Hoeksema is currently a director of the Marcus Corporation and a trustee of Aircraft Finance Trust. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in aviation engineering technology. He earned an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1977.
