New Diana School Supt. Carl Key said Tuesday he did not believe anyone was “severely hurt” when a loaded school bus struck a car on Hwy. 154 Monday morning.

The car’s driver was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview by either his wife or ambulance for further evaluation, but all children on the bus returned to class after being checked by school nurses and ambulance personnel, the superintendent said.

Key, who was at a conference in Austin when the accident occurred, said he was told 30 students were aboard the bus.

The accident occurred when the female driver, looking back into the sun, struck the car as she “didn’t see the vehicle,” he said. Key said he believed she was pulling out to go west on Hwy. 154, and that she has been suspended with pay until blood test results are received and the investigation into the accident is complete.

While the car sustained “significant” damage, the bus had “very little,” and some students aboard stated they didn’t even know there had been an accident, Key said. He said he thought the crash occurred between 7:15 a.m. and 7:45 a.m.
