The broad range of dance skills and talent of the Kilgore College Dance Department will be on display at its annual Spring Dance Concert, 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, in Van Cliburn Auditorium on the KC campus.
The performance is a collaboration of the students and instructors in the KC Dance Department, led by instructor Cathy Beckman.
According to Beckman, this year’s concert offers a variety of dance styles and techniques including jazz, hip-hop and a tap number performed by the students from dance classes taught by Shelley Wayne, Assistant Rangerette Director.
“The more traditional include several ballet dances, one of which is a Pointe piece to music of Vivaldi,” Beckman said. “Modern dances give the students a chance to explore various types of collaborative approaches to choreography as well as create unusual accompaniment with tape collages.”
Beckman said that the students were also able to incorporate concepts they learned from Carla Rudiger, a former KC student who has danced professionally.
The Dance Department at KC offers curriculum in ballet, modern dance, tap and jazz for the beginning student, as well as those who have had more extensive dance experience.
Dance at KC prepares students who wish to enter the professional world upon graduation as well as those who want to continue their studies at a four-year college as majors in fine arts, physical education or dance education.
The KC Dance Department also includes production courses in technique and choreography that transfer to four-year universities.
Tickets to the concert are $10, $5 for students with KC identification. The box office will open 7 p.m. the night of the performance.
