LONGVIEW, Texas, December 11, 2013: Excited eyes peeking through the glass of the oven watching as cookies rise and puff up, eagerly waiting for them to cool so they can garnish them with clumps of frosting and a mountain of sprinkles is one of many holiday activities families in America enjoy. For families in need, providing the essentials for baking such tasty treats is not always an easy task. Residents at Buckner Westminster Place feel that all children and families should get to experience the joys of decorating Christmas cookies, so they have volunteered to bake 500 sugar cookies and assist children with decorating them at the annual Buckner Children and Family Services (BCFS) Christmas party. The residents will set up 12 decorating stations and will assist children and their families with this fun Christmas tradition.

“I am so excited to decorate Christmas cookies with the children that BCFS provides services to,” said 82-year-old Vivian Crowson, a resident of Buckner Westminster Place. “My daughter-in-law works for BCFS and I see the wonderful work she and the rest of the employees do for the families in East Texas and it warms my heart. I am so happy to be a part of this event. I used to decorate Christmas cookies with my kids and my grandkids, but now everyone is grown up. My great-grandkids are just now reaching the point where we can decorate cookies together. It is such a fun holiday activity for families.”

The BCFS Christmas party is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be held at Buckner Children and Family Services (110 E Cotton St, Longview, TX 75601). Buckner Westminster Place residents and staff will arrive at Buckner Children and Family Services before the event to set up 12 decorating stations for the party.

“The best part for me is going to be watching the children differentiate their cookies from one another,” teased Crowson. “It’s like a contest to see who can have the most unique cookie. They usually go overboard on the sprinkles. None of the materials go to waste that’s for certain. If anything gets broken, it is an excuse to eat one early. We sign up for these projects and do these things because we love children. The other residents are just as excited as I am, and we all look forward to partaking in the festivities. This is an opportunity for us to show the children that they are loved and that we care.”

“When we heard about the Buckner Children and Family Services’ Christmas party, we knew we wanted to participate in a special way,” said Wes Wells, executive director of Buckner Westminster Place. “The residents love helping children and are looking forward to participating in an intergenerational activity with them and their families. We cannot wait to see how creative the children get with their cookies!”
