The University Interscholastic League in Austin released the conference cutoff numbers for the 2014-2016 reclassification and realignment Monday. These numbers provide the range of enrollment for each of the six conferences, including the divisional cutoffs for football.

Gilmer High School’s latest enrollment figure of 685 will make it the largest school in the new Class 4A Division II for football.

This was good news to start December for Gilmer Head Coach/Athletic Director Jeff Traylor, as he reflected on an adversity-filled month of November.

“We really needed it. We’re pretty discouraged, to be honest with you,” Coach Traylor commented Monday upon hearing the news.

“The Kilgore loss was tough on us. Losing the bond (election) was tough on us. Getting beat by Argyle was tough. So we needed it. It’s pretty exciting and now we need to go get ready for another tough season.”

No one will know which teams will be in Gilmer’s new district until February, but some strong possibilities include current fellow members Spring Hill and Gladewater. Other candidates include schools as far away as Texarkana Pleasant Grove and Emory Rains as well as Atlanta, Bullard and Canton. Even Tatum, which has moved back up, cannot be ruled out.

Speaking of Kilgore and Argyle, both schools will be in 4A Division I. Argyle will be one of the smallest schools in the division with its 698 enrollment while Kilgore will again be one of the largest with 1026.

Harmony will be in 3A Division I. New Diana will be in 3A Division II. Ore City and Big Sandy will be in 2A Division I. Union Hill will be in 1A Division I.

The 2014-16 alignments will be released on Feb. 3 for football and basketball. District alignments for other activities will be released in the order of their seasons. More information about UIL alignments can be found at www.uiltexas.org/alignments.
