LaVern Spencer McCarthy, a native of Gilmer, Texas, and current resident of Blair, Oklahoma, was recently selected as the Fall-Winter 2013 “Bright Star” by A Galaxy of Verse. This non-profit literary organization, established in 1974, and located in Garland, Texas, publishes a twice-yearly poetry anthology by the same name.
McCarthy, born Dorthy LaVern Spencer, loved nature, and spent a great deal of her time exploring the woods and meadows around her home. At age ten her family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. It was there she discovered her love of reading and writing poetry.
“My mother was a poet, albeit a non-published one, so I come by my love of poetry naturally. Despite my 5th grade English teacher saying my poetry was no good, I won first place and a dollar prize in school poetry contest.”
This talented poet has won over five hundred state awards and thirteen national awards for her poetry. She has been published in such magazines as Home Life, and Cappers Weekly. She has also published a chapbook titled Dream Shadows.
She served as both Manningham (for students) Contest Chair, and Contest Chair, for the Poetry Society of Oklahoma. She is also a member of the Poetry Society of Texas. Her greatest joy is entering contests where she wins often. She continues to be a prolific poet, often writing several poems a week for upcoming contests.
The Bright Star’s biography and selected poems provide the opening feature for the Galaxy anthology, which also publishes poetry by members and contest winners. President and Editor, Barbara Blanks, chooses a “star” based on the poet’s body of work, and a continuing passion for keeping the art of poetry alive, accessible, and comprehensible.
The purpose of A Galaxy of Verse is to make available to good poets throughout the country, opportunities to have their work read by a national public. It encourages the creative process by publishing the work of its members. It is open to poets across the United States, with many of its members also affiliated with the Poetry Society of Texas and other established poetry societies.
