BUCKEYE PRIDE is instilled in the youth of our area at an early age as this crop of future varsity Buckeyes illustrates during the Yamboree School Parade through downtown Gilmer last Friday. The truck pulling these young football players had a sign on it describing them as the Buckeyes of 2020 and 2021.

AFTER ANOTHER year of Yamboree celebration, the Gilmer Buckeyes are getting back to work on finishing off another undefeated run to the District 16-3A championship.

The top-ranked Buckeyes (7-0, 3-0) will need three more wins to accomplish this feat for the 2013 season, as they have in 11 of the 12 previous ones.

First up is Spring Hill (2-6, 0-4). The Buckeyes will travel 15 miles down Hwy. 300 Friday night to Panther Stadium to kick it off at 7:30 p.m.

The Panthers returned seven starters on offense and three on defense from last year’s 3-7 team. Spring Hill last made the playoffs in 2007.

Coach Mark Sartain is the new leader of the Panther program. The veteran mentor has been head football coach at Cross Roads, Eustace, White Oak, Trinity Valley Community College and East Texas Baptist University.

Spring Hill’s two wins were over Pleasant Grove (24-6) and Bullard Brook Hill (35-14).

“We had a good week,” said Coach Traylor of the week off the Buckeyes enjoyed after the Henderson game.

“Of course, you had a lot of distractions —our kids showing chickens and rabbits, cows, all that good stuff that’s part of the Yamboree.

“So we had a good Yamboree. We had two good days at work. Lifted weights a couple of times. Conditioned a couple of times.

“So, hopefully, we’re mentally and physically fresh and ready to go.”

In assessing this year’s Panthers, Coach Traylor commented, “They’ve done some good things offensively. They run the Pistol (formation). Move their back around quite a bit, multiple formations.

“They’ve done a good job mixing their run and their pass.

“Defensively, they base out of four down (linemen).

“And their kids play hard and Coach Sartain really has done a nice little job of coaching those kids.

“I think they have one of the best players in the district in Morgan Knight (72). He’s starting both ways for them and he’s just a fantastic ball player.”

Knight, a senior, is not just good at football. He won state in discus and finished second in state in the shot put in Austin last spring.

A week from Friday, the Buckeyes return to Buckeye Stadium for their final home game of 2013 against Bullard. This will be the annual Breast Cancer Awareness “Pink Out” game. Donation link, t-shirt order forms, and contact information can be found at: http://www.buckeyepinkout.webs.com

Two weeks from Friday, the Buckeyes will travel to R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium in Kilgore to take on the Bulldogs in a game which is likely to decide the final champion of the “District of Doom” before it is realigned out of existence next February.
