LETU engineering student Stephen Wood wins 2nd place at IEEE competition

(LONGVIEW, Texas)—LeTourneau University engineering major Stephen Wood of Longview, Texas, won second place in the 2013 IEEE Metro-Con Undergraduate Student Poster Competition. Stephen was presenting a poster on the 2011-2013 High Frequency Antenna Coupler (HFAC) senior design project, which was the focus of an electrical and computer engineering capstone course under the direction of faculty sponsor Dr. Joonwan Kim, who also sponsored Stephen at the poster competition.

IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, an association of professionals dedicated to the advancement of technology and professional development within the field of electrical engineering.

The 2013 IEEE MetroCon was presented by the IEEE Fort Worth Section. The MetroCon took place at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington Texas on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The MetroCon featured seven tracks on the latest technology developments in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. This year’s event featured an exhibits program and a poster competition for area college students.

The High Frequency Antenna Coupler (HFAC) design project featured in Wood’s poster was a senior design team project in partnership with Rockwell Collins Inc. (RCI) to create an antenna coupler with more precise tuning than current competitor models. An antenna coupler's purpose is to provide maximum power transfer to antennas of different length for signals of varying frequencies. The final antenna coupler prototype, which was the subject matter of the poster, was implemented and tested with a radio transmission in the 14 MHz band across 675 miles. The transmission was successful, showing the final design to be feasible. Based on the results gathered by the LETU HFAC team, RCI intends to continue the development of this design.

“Projects like this demonstrate that our students graduate with the hands-on technical skills needed to go straight to work for high-tech companies throughout the world,” said LETU Dean of the School of Engineering Dr. Ronald DeLap.  “Companies like RCI have partnered with LeTourneau for years because they know that our students consistently deliver world-class solutions to complex technical problems.”

Other universities competing in the competition included the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington. A graduate student poster competition was also held concurrently at the MetroCon. 

LETU student Tim Hong also attended the undergraduate poster competition presenting a poster on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) scholarship program and retention rates. Each year, IEEE hosts this and many other conferences with the goal of bringing industry leaders and academic professionals together to discuss technology and its global impact.
