International education non-profit seeks world-minded local representatives

A passion for learning about other cultures. An interest in working with teenagers. A connection to your local community. A network of open-minded, loving individuals and families . An eagerness to share your community and country with international students. These are the core characteristics of a local representative of Nacel Open Door, Inc.

Nacel Open Door (NOD), a nonprofit organization based out of St. Paul, Minn., and specializing in international education and student cultural exchanges, welcomes more than 2,000 international high school students from nearly 30 countries to the United States each year. During their stay, students live with an American host family and attend high school in the host family’s community.Host families and local representatives share the “American experience” with these students who are interested in improving their English language usage and developing their role as citizens of the world.

Local representatives serve as the students’ support system while they are in the United States. Local reps locate loving, safe host family environments, matching students with local families based on interests and preferences. They keep in contact with families and students throughout the exchange and conduct orientation sessions to aid in cultural adjustment. Most local reps learn as much about each student’s home country and culture as the host family.

Local reps are overseen by Regional Coordinators, who train and guide reps through the process of supporting international students and American families. Support is also offered by the National Office, with a full administrative staff, trained advisors and counselors, and marketing assistance.

Individuals who wish to promote international understanding within their community while facilitating the experience of a lifetime for international high school students eager to learn about the U.S. first-hand should send a résumé or contact information and any questions to Regional Coordinator Stacey Henson at nacelsouthernexchange@gmail.com. More information can also be found at www.nacelopendoor.org.

NOD is an exchange visitor sponsor under the designation of the U.S. Department of State, following federal regulations and protocols for students arriving on a J-1 visa. NOD also has a full listing by the Council on Standards for International Education Travel (CSIET), complying with an annual audit of standards set forth to maintain student and host family safety.
